You Don't Need a New Laptop

We are not to throw away those things which can benefit our neighbor. Goods are called good because they can be used for good: they are instruments for good, in the hands of those who use them properly.
—Clement of Alexandria, 2nd Century

One of my not-very-practical hobbies is buying cheap, good used laptops (e.g., old Macbooks and ThinkPads) and cleaning and fixing them up.

I often install Linux, because old laptops often run like new with a non-Apple, non-Microsoft operating system.

But then they sit quietly, waiting to be used. I’d love to find a way to give them away to people who need laptops for work or school, but I haven’t yet. And, people usually think old laptops are junk so they avoid them.

My latest effort: two 2015 13” Macbook Airs. Still beautiful, functional machines. I’m installing new SSDs in them too, and Linux. Total cost: ~$45 each with new SSD.

You never need to buy a new laptop. The world is filled with good used technology.
