You Are Not An Average
Much of the productivity/tech/life/entrepreneurial bro advice I read is just them discovering and regurgitating motivational speakers of the past.
Jim Rohn is a popular example–he mentored Tony Robbins, a guy you’ve probably heard of.
I don’t mind the advice. My concern is that when you dig deeper, most of it is wrong, or misapplied, or taken out of context.
For example, a famous Jim Rohn-ism is “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”.
It sounds good, right? Do people around us influence us? Sure.
But we are not the ‘average’ of those people. We are individuals with agency. Guard your time and energy. Have standards. Then, let go of trying to curate and optimize the people around you.
